What To Buy First in Abyss
A decision guide — not a shopping list. Covers which gun, tube, and equipment to buy at each stage, which purchases look tempting but will actually slow you down, and the order that three independent sources agree on.
Who This Guide Is For
You have some cash and you are not sure whether to upgrade your gun, your tube, or save for something bigger. You have heard conflicting advice about Air Rifle Gun. You want to know the actual priority order — not a list of everything worth buying.
This page assumes you are working through the beginner loop (catch fish → sell to Kraken → do quests) and are ready to make your first meaningful purchase decision.
Short Answer
Within your first session: Fish Radar from Richard ($450) is the first purchase worth making. Then save for the Pufferfish Tube ($2,850) — it is the single item that most changes what you can do in Abyss. Do not buy the Air Rifle Gun. Do not buy the Fire Tube. Those two are traps that cost enough to meaningfully delay your actual first milestone.
After Pufferfish Tube: activate the teleporter (Scientist quest), then head to Ancient Sands. Your next joint goal is Crossbow Gun ($4,750 from Henry's) + Boat Tube (~$5,250 from David's) — buy both before anything else in that zone.
Your First Hour — What to Buy
You start with Bottle Gun + Wooden Tube. Two purchases are worth considering during the tutorial fish grind; everything else can wait.
Fish Radar — $450
BUY NOWFrom Richard at his stall in the Forgotten Dome. Beebom confirms price and function.
The Fish Radar shows the name and mutation status of every fish near you. Mutations sell for 2x–8.5x their base price — missing a mutation fish because you cannot tell it apart from a common catch is a real income loss. Game8 recommends buying the radar before doing Marcus quests in Ancient Sands. Buying it in the first hour is strictly better.
Do Not Buy Yet — Trap Purchases in the Starting Shop
Starter Gun ($75) — skip it
IGN price table: $75 for +5 damage. The damage jump is small enough that most players save the $75 toward Beginner Gun instead. If you are grinding raw fish, Beginner Gun ($350) is the more meaningful upgrade.
2+ sources confirmBeginner's Gun ($350) — consider skipping
IGN: $350, 20 damage, 2.4s cooldown. Game8's progression path never lists this as a recommended purchase — it goes Bottle Gun → Advanced Gun (from Kraken's quest chain). The incremental improvement does not justify delaying Pufferfish Tube.
Single source / communityAir Rifle Gun ($2,150) — definitely skip
Game8 progression guide explicitly: 'Do Not Buy the Fire Tube and Air Rifle Gun. Instead, go straight for the Boat Tube and Crossbow Gun — Boat Tube from David's Tube Shop, Crossbow Gun from Henry's Harpoon Shop, both in Forgotten Deep.' Destructoid confirms: Crossbow Gun at $4,750 is the real Ancient Sands gun goal, not Air Rifle.
2+ sources confirmNormal Tube — Earn It, Do Not Buy It
Game8: Normal Tube is a quest reward from Kraken's Quest 1–5. It is automatically given to you. Do not spend money on any tube before Pufferfish Tube.
First Major Purchase — Pufferfish Tube ($2,850)
This is the single purchase that most changes what you can do in Abyss.
Game8: “Save up enough money to purchase it, since it can bring you to the next area, Ancient Sands.” Destructoid: the Boat Tube from David's Tube Shop is the follow-up purchase that “can get you through majority of the fish available in Ancient Sands.”
Why Tube First, Not Gun?
The most common beginner mistake is spending $1,050 on Advanced Gun before Pufferfish Tube. Here is the logic:
- →Oxygen capacity determines how long you can stay underwater. A longer oxygen window means more fish per trip, which means more income per session.
- →More income per session means faster return on the Pufferfish investment — the tube pays for itself through extra catches.
- →Advanced Gun is useful only if you can stay down long enough to reach the fish worth shooting.
- →Game8 sample setup at end of Forgotten Deep: Pufferfish Tube + Advanced Gun. Tube comes first in the description.
What About Advanced Gun Before Pufferfish Tube?
Game8 lists Advanced Gun ($1,050) as the Forgotten Dome gun endpoint, and Pufferfish Tube as the tube endpoint. IGN confirms Advanced Gun stats: 40 damage, 2.2s cooldown. If you have enough cash where buying both is feasible, Game8 recommends completing Kraken's Quest 1–5 to get Normal Tube for free, then buying Pufferfish Tube and Advanced Gun together as your final Forgotten Dome setup.
Advanced Gun is Kraken Quest 5 reward in some progression versions. Check whether your game version grants it automatically before purchasing.
Before Leaving Forgotten Deep — Teleporter First
Activate the Teleporter (Scientist Quest)
Game8: “Complete the Scientist's Quest to unlock the Teleporter. This makes it much easier to travel between areas, at the cost of a small fee.” Beebom confirms: the teleporter requires finding three materials scattered across the starter island.
This is not a purchase, but it is the most important pre-departure action. Without the teleporter, every return to sell fish means a long swim back. Game8: “For players without the Sell Anywhere Gamepass, this is especially important.”
Ancient Sands — Buy Boat Tube and Crossbow Gun Together ($10,000 Total)
The $10,000 milestone — not $2,850, not $4,750, but $10,000.
Game8: "Save up a total of $10,000 to purchase both the Crossbow Gun and Boat Tube — Crossbow Gun from Henry's Harpoon Shop and Boat Tube from David's Tube Shop, both in Forgotten Deep." Destructoid: farm Diver delivery quests until you hit $5,250 for the Boat Tube, then continue to $4,750 for the Crossbow Gun. Buy both before spending on anything else in this zone.
Boat Tube
~$5,250From David's Tube Shop (Forgotten Deep)
IGN price table and Beebom both confirm ~$5,250. Destructoid names Boat Tube as the priority buy that 'can get you through majority of the fish available in Ancient Sands.' Game8: enables deeper zone access.
Crossbow Gun
$4,750From Henry's Harpoon Shop (Forgotten Deep)
IGN: $4,750, 90 damage, 2.6s cooldown, 0.65 control. Significant upgrade over Advanced Gun (40 damage). Game8 and Destructoid both name Crossbow Gun as the Ancient Sands gun purchase to prioritize. Do not buy Air Rifle Gun instead.
Why Not Wasted Gun ($17,500) Right Away?
IGN: Wasted Gun is $17,500, 140 damage, 2.2s cooldown. It is a large jump from Crossbow Gun (90 damage). Game8 lists it as the “save up for” goal after Boat Tube + Crossbow Gun, not the immediate buy. The Boat Tube enables the fishing locations where you earn the money to afford Wasted Gun in the first place — buying Wasted Gun before Boat Tube means you cannot stay down long enough to use it effectively.
Gun vs Tube — Which Do You Buy First?
This is the most common either/or question. The answer is stage-dependent:
First hour (no Pufferfish Tube yet)
Tube first
Pufferfish Tube ($2,850) unlocks the zone that makes all future income faster. Your current tube caps how deep and how long you can stay. IGN confirms Bottle Gun damage (10) is low but tolerable — what limits you is oxygen, not damage.
Pufferfish Tube owned, Ancient Sands entry
Buy Boat Tube first, then Crossbow Gun
Game8: save $10,000 for both together. Destructoid: farm Diver deliveries to $5,250 for Boat Tube first — it directly determines your oxygen in the new zone. Crossbow Gun ($4,750) then follows.
Mid Ancient Sands — have Crossbow Gun + Boat Tube
Save for Wasted Gun ($17,500)
IGN: Wasted Gun (140 damage, $17,500) is the next gun milestone. Game8: 'Save Up for Wasted Gun and Rukiry Tube' as the transition to Spirit Roots. Tube upgrade (Rukiry) can wait until you are in Spirit Roots.
When Race Rerolls Become Worth It
Race rerolling costs Star Shards — a limited resource earned from bestiary completions and quests. The Best Race Guide covers which races to use; this section covers when to start spending shards on rerolls.
Note: exact shard costs for rerolling are not consistently documented across sources. Check the bestiary screen in-game for your current shard count before committing.
Common Buying Mistakes
Buying Air Rifle Gun instead of waiting for Crossbow Gun
Fix: Game8 is explicit: skip Air Rifle Gun ($2,150). The $2,150 spent on Air Rifle is $2,150 not spent on Crossbow Gun ($4,750). If you are $2,150 away from Crossbow Gun, keep fishing — the incremental damage gain from Air Rifle (55 vs 40) is not worth the delay.
2+ sources confirmSpending cash on Fire Tube
Fix: Game8: 'Do Not Buy the Fire Tube.' It is an intermediate upgrade in the wrong zone — by the time you can afford it, you should be saving for Boat Tube instead. Confirmed as a trap purchase by Game8 Progression Guide.
2+ sources confirmBuying Starter Gun ($75) or Beginner Gun ($350)
Fix: IGN price table shows these are small incremental upgrades (15 and 20 damage respectively) compared to Advanced Gun (40 damage) which is either free from quests or $1,050. If you are spending money on a gun in Forgotten Deep, save until you can afford Advanced Gun, or wait until you reach Ancient Sands for Crossbow Gun.
1 source confirmed, community-supportedBuying race rerolls before you have stable shard income
Fix: The Best Race Guide recommends Spirit for cash bonus, but you need enough Star Shards to both reroll AND continue bestiary completion. Holding off on rerolls until you have ~50+ shards and have unlocked the bestiary for your current zone prevents being stranded with a suboptimal race and no shards to fix it.
community consensusSpending money on geodes before Virelia
Fix: All sources confirm: bring geodes to Virelia to open them. Selling geodes raw at the NPC gives less value than the artifact inside. This is not a large amount of money either way, but opening geodes is the consistent recommendation.

Source conflict note
IGN lists exact prices for every gun. Game8 describes the buying sequence without always giving exact prices. Beebom gives tube prices. We used IGN prices for guns and Beebom for tubes. Where Game8 and IGN conflict on whether a purchase is recommended (e.g., whether to buy Beginner Gun), we follow Game8 because Game8's source is specifically a progression guide, while IGN is a gun reference table.
