Abyss Beginner Guide

How Abyss Roblox works from your first catch to your first meaningful upgrade — controls, the catch mini-game, the income loop, and the five rules that determine how fast you progress.

Who This Guide Is For

You just started Abyss and the core loop is clear but the bigger picture is not — or you have been playing for a bit and want to make sure you are not wasting time on the wrong activities. This page is about the first few hours, not the endgame.

Short Answer

Abyss is a fishing progression game. You catch fish, sell them to NPCs, buy better gear, and do quests to unlock deeper zones and stronger equipment. The fastest early progression path is completing all starting-area quests before you grind fish — the rewards are better. Open every geode you find at Virelia and equip whatever artifact you get. Manual gear equip is the most commonly missed beginner mistake.

The Core Loop

TechWiser describes Abyss as a fishing game where you catch fish to feed the Kraken in exchange for money, which you use to buy gear, open geodes for artifacts, and progress through increasingly difficult ocean zones.

  1. 1

    Catch fish

Point your crosshair at a fish and hold left-click. A progress bar appears — move the green zone over the marker to catch. TechWiser: the game teaches you this with a brief interactive overview when you first descend.

  2. 2

    Sell to NPCs

Bring your catch to the Kraken or another NPC to sell. Game8: selling fish is the main income source — use it to buy better gear so you can catch more valuable fish.

  3. 3

    Buy gear

Better tubes let you go deeper and stay underwater longer. Better guns deal more damage so you can catch stronger fish. Game8: make sure to manually equip new gear — it does not auto-equip.

  4. 4

    Do quests

NPCs give quests that reward XP and cash far beyond raw fish grinding. Game8: prioritize completing all quests in the starting area before venturing further.

  5. 5

    Open geodes

Geodes appear randomly during fishing as a treasure chest marker on the catch bar. Catch both the chest and the fish in one mini-game to get the geode. Bring it to Virelia to open it and receive an artifact.

The 5 Rules of Fast Progression

Game8's Beginner's Guide (March 2026) lists five rules for progressing quickly. All five are confirmed across sources.

All five rules are cross-confirmed by 2+ sources

Finish quests to get rewards

Quest rewards give a large amount of XP and cash per unit time compared to grinding fish. Game8 explicitly recommends quests as the fastest progression path in the starting area.

Avoid running out of oxygen

Death causes you to lose some of your caught fish and lose money. Game8 notes this can set you back, especially if you were carrying high-value fish.

Sell the fish you catch

The basic income loop. Catch fish, sell to Kraken, use cash to upgrade gear. Game8 frames this as the foundation of all progression.

Buy and equip tubes and guns

Tubes extend oxygen (let you go deeper). Guns increase damage (let you catch tougher fish). TechWiser confirms you start with Bottle Gun + Wooden Tube. Game8: always manually equip new gear.

Open chests in the area

Treasure chests scattered through zones give small amounts of XP, cash, and Star Shards. Game8: not worth progressing through exclusively, but worth doing as you pass through.

Starting Area NPCs

Game8 (March 2026) recommends completing all questlines from the four starting NPCs before moving to deeper zones. Visit each one after every catch run to pick up new quests.

Kraken

Forgotten Deep — center

Primary quest giver and fish buyer. Start here after every catch run.

Mr. Black

Forgotten Deep

Mutation quest chain — targeted fish species with cash and artifact rewards.

Virelia

Forgotten Deep — near Kraken

Opens geodes into artifacts. Visit her every time you have a geode.

Scientist

Forgotten Deep

XP and progression quests with material/gear rewards.

Your First 30 Minutes

0–5 min

Learn the catch mini-game

The game walks you through catching your first fish. TechWiser: you receive Bottle Gun + Wooden Tube and a brief interactive tutorial. Focus on understanding the catch bar — moving the green zone over the marker is the core loop.

5–15 min

Catch and sell fish, talk to every NPC

Sell every fish to the Kraken. Talk to all NPCs in the starting area (Kraken, Mr. Black, Virelia, Scientist) to unlock their questlines. Game8: complete all starting-area quests for the fastest early progression.

15–25 min

Spend first cash on a better gun or tube

Your first upgrade makes fishing faster and opens slightly deeper areas. Check the Shops Guide for timing — rushing an expensive gun before you have the oxygen to use it is a common beginner mistake.

25–30 min

Open your first geode, equip your first artifact

If you found a geode while fishing, visit Virelia to open it. Even a Common artifact equipped is a permanent boost. Game8: do not underestimate artifact value — equip whatever has the best stats.

Common Beginner Mistakes

MED

Manually swimming back to sell instead of using fast travel

Fix: Most zones have a return point near the Kraken. Use it to avoid losing oxygen on the return trip.

HIGH

Not equipping new gear

Fix: Game8 explicitly calls this out: new gear does not auto-equip. Open your inventory (G) and equip it manually.

HIGH

Chasing rare fish before upgrading gear

Fix: The catch bar difficulty scales with fish rarity. Attempting Legendary fish with the Starter Gun wastes time. Progress your gear first.

HIGH

Ignoring quests and grinding raw fish

Fix: Game8: quest rewards give more XP and cash per unit time than fish grinding. Always check if a nearby NPC has an active quest before you start grinding.

MED

Selling geodes unopened

Fix: The artifact from a geode is almost always worth more than the raw sell price. Open every geode at Virelia.

LOW

Boosting with Left Shift in safe zones

Fix: TechWiser: Shift boosts speed but drains oxygen rapidly. Use it only when escaping danger or crossing large distances — not while fishing.

Your Starting Gear

TechWiser (February 2026) confirms you start with two items:

Bottle Gun

Starting Gun

Lowest DMG of all guns

Sufficient for Forgotten Deep fish only. Upgrade priority: early.

Wooden Tube

Starting Tube

Lowest Oxygen capacity

Limits how deep you can go. Upgrade priority: early, especially before Ancient Sands.

Game8 (March 2026): always manually equip new gear — it does not auto-equip.
